These are important safety guidelines to follow to prevent fire or injury when using candles:

  • Trim the wick: Before lighting a candle, ensure that the wick is trimmed to approximately 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) in length. A longer wick can cause the flame to become too large and potentially lead to accidents.

  • Keep the wax pool clean: Make sure to remove any debris, such as wick trimmings or matchsticks, from the wax pool before lighting or while the candle is burning. Foreign objects in the pool can ignite and cause a fire.

  • Limit burning time: It is recommended not to burn a candle for longer than 4-hour intervals. Exceeding this time frame can increase the risk of the candle overheating or the container cracking.

  • Use a heat-resistant surface: Place the candle on a stable and heat-resistant surface. Avoid using flammable materials as candle holders. Heat can transfer through the container, so it is essential to choose an appropriate surface that can withstand high temperatures.

  • Avoid drafts: Keep candles away from drafts, such as open windows or fans. Drafts can cause the flame to flicker, potentially igniting nearby objects.

  • Never leave unattended: Always keep candles within sight when they are lit. It is crucial to extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to sleep. Unattended candles pose a significant fire hazard.

  • Keep away from flammable items: Do not burn candles near objects that can easily catch fire, such as curtains, clothing, books, or flammable liquids. Keep a safe distance between the candle and any potentially combustible materials.

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets: Place candles in areas where children and pets cannot reach them. Children and animals may accidentally knock over a burning candle or come into contact with the hot wax, causing burns or other injuries.

  • Avoid extinguishing with water: Do not attempt to extinguish a candle with water. Water can cause splattering of hot wax and may spread the fire. Instead, use a candle snuffer or carefully blow out the flame.

  • Allow wax to harden: Before relighting a candle, touching it, or moving it, always allow the wax to harden completely. Hot wax can cause burns or spills if handled prematurely.

By following these safety precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of fire or injury when using candles.
